Know the Colors

A keen study of the color wheel is necessary to understand the fundamentals of color mixing or color blending. Using the primary colors – Red, Yellow and Blue, we can mix these colors to form other colours and they are known as secondary or tertiary colors. Below is an illustration of colors mixed from the primary colors.

Understanding the threads

Threads, unlike paints, do not blend colours easily. For threads to have a gradient effect, we will need to fill the space with different colors of threads. Using a thread chart is useful to determine the purity of the thread colour and the stitch density. The stitch density will give the embroidery a sense of realism.

Digitizing

We can start the digitizing process when we have chosen the colors, analyze and plan the density of the stitches.  For example, if we are to create a gradient from yellow to red, we will need to mix 3 color threads together and start building the fills accordingly.
